By the end of this year, Thailand’s Software Industry Promotion Agency (Sipa) will use RFID technology to track the world-famous Thai fragrant rice. This is another technological innovation following Sipa’s successful use of barcodes to track fragrant rice supply chains. Sipa uses barcodes to track the flow of fragrant rice from the rice market to the rice mills and then to suppliers.

Santi Suraratana, the vice chairman of Sipa responsible for technical research and development, said that Sipa has completed the Roi-Kaen Sarn pilot project based on barcode technology and is now purchasing RFID-related equipment to implement RFID tracking in the fragrant rice supply chain by the end of the year.

RFID technology will monitor the circulation of fragrant rice throughout the logistics process.

“We will complete the third phase of the project in the next few months, using RFID to transmit information between different parties in the supply chain, rather than the traditional form of paper document recording.” Santi said.

He said that RFID technology enables the transmission and real-time viewing of information throughout the supply chain.

Sipa’s next step will be to study how to use RFID to track the source of rice, and the organization is also studying the use of RFID to track cassava.

Santi said: “We started this pilot project to better research new technologies in order to support industry, commerce, logistics, government and the private sector, reduce errors, improve information accuracy and increase supply chain productivity.”

He said that RFID plays an important role in agriculture and can be used to track the source of fragrant rice, the rice mills processed and other information.
