Italian stone supplier uses RFID to track marble and granite

Italian marble and granite suppliers use RFID technology to track the entire process from the arrival of the slate to the factory to the sale to the user. Each labeled marble or granite slab is photographed and stored in the company information system corresponding to the label number.
The RFID system used by the stone supplier Brescia Graniti is integrated by Zerouno Information Technology Company. The passive 13.56MHz RFID tag is manufactured by Lab ID and conforms to the ISO15693 standard. When the slates were shipped to Graniti, they were tagged and photographed, and a portable RFID interrogator was used to read the number of each slate’s label, and then sent to the company’s information system via Wi-Fi. The label is affixed to the edge of the slate with an adhesive developed by Zerouno.

The company’s original plan was to use barcodes, but since the slate is stored outdoors for a long period of time, the barcodes will be damaged by the weather.
The portable RFID interrogator is provided by Datalogic. After the workers read the slate data and send it to the company’s information system, they can share all the slate information with the sales department, such as size, stone type, sales status, etc.
When a customer orders a slate, the worker uses a portable RFID interrogator to find a specific slate, which saves time and effort. The company will use 60,000 to 70,000 tags each year. After the slate is found, polishing and other procedures are required. Bresciana said that if a barcode is used, the barcode will be destroyed in these steps. This is one of the reasons why the company finally chose RFID tags.
Before using this RFID system, the company used pen and paper for office work. It usually took three days for each order to be ordered. After using the RFID system, the time for ordering was shortened to one day. In addition, using the information in the RFID tags, the front-line sales department can quickly obtain inventory status. The company said that their return on investment has risen, but did not disclose specific data.
Davide Giuradei, head of the ID department of Zerouno, said: “The implementation of the system allows Graniti to precisely control the entire production and sales process, reducing the error rate and management time.”
