Dog toys, snacks, services and activities provider Bark & Co is testing RFID solutions at Dubbed BarkShop Live, an RFID pop-up store in New York. The store uses RFID technology to help consumers make shopping decisions based on dog interests.

The pop-up store opened on June 12 this year and is a consumer interactive concept store of Bark & Co. The company will decide to use similar technologies in New York or other cities based on the attractiveness of the new technology.

Andras Szalai, technical director of BarkShop Live, said: “We try to see everything from a dog’s perspective. We want to know more about how dogs see the world and what makes them happy.”

When shopping in a pop-up store, the owner needs to make an appointment on the BarkShop Live website and buy a ticket. The 30 yuan in the ticket can be paid when purchasing the item.

The store is located in Manhattan and includes a dog play area full of toys. Each toy has a built-in rugged, easy-to-wash passive EPC Gen2 UHF RFID tag, and the tag ID and item details are bound.

When entering the store, each dog will wear a vest with a built-in battery-powered RFID reader and passive UHF RFID tags. Then, the dog wearing the vest can enter the play area to play. After the reader reads the toy tag ID, it will be transmitted to the server via WiFi. The software will determine which toy the dog likes to play with the most based on these data.

When the dog approaches other dogs wearing vests, the reader will also transmit the information of other dogs to the software. This way the system will know which dogs like to stay together.

In the store, owners can use their smartphone web browsers to track their favorite toys and their playmates. Szalai explained that the web browser can help us develop mobile applications quickly and iteratively.

The smartphone will list the toys that consumers are most interested in, which can help consumers make shopping decisions. These toys will be shipped to consumers’ homes. Consumers can also use these data to arrange “dates” with dogs’ favorite playmates.

Szalai said: “BarkShop Live is an interesting retail experiment. We don’t know what will happen, but we are sure it is great.”
