Keystone Cable is a Singapore-based company that provides wires and cables for construction facilities, oil and gas, and data communications. Keystone Cable’s customers are all over the Asia-Pacific region. There are always hundreds of different products stacked in the factory in Singapore. For people who are not familiar with the products, it is almost impossible to distinguish dozens of different cables with the naked eye. How to effectively manage these products has become a challenge for enterprises, so Keystone Cable found Xerafy and usedRFIDTechnology to track and locate these wide range of products.

In the last step of production, the cables are wound on the cable reel and put into the warehouse, and then are respectively wound on the smaller reels for delivery according to the customer’s order. Some products will be stored in indoor warehouses, but some cables can be stored outdoors. For Keystone Cable’s storage department, this storage method invisibly expands the scope of the warehouse, so the staff spends 30 to 45 minutes each time Time to find products.

Derek Zhu, Senior Strategy Manager of Keystone Cable, said: “Our workers spend a lot of time looking for products every day, which leads to inefficient processes in the entire organization. Although we have done our best to mark each reel, we have not been able to accurately locate the reel. Because the cable reel is often moved when winding and releasing the cable, it is impossible to set a specific position for each reel.”

The Scientific Engineering Research Council (SERC) of Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology (SlMTech) under the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) has provided Keystone Cable with a solution that can improve the efficiency of the tracking process.

The label used to record the position is on the bottom of the label cylinder with the number of the roll recorder on the iron frame where the roll slip is stored.

“In the whole project, the performance of Xerafy labels is very outstanding. Although the rolls and shelves are made of metal, electronic labelIt was unaffected, and the reading and writing process went smoothly. Now we only need to enter the number of the cable reel, and the corresponding location information will be displayed on the handheld device. The work that could only be done in the past half an hour now doesn’t even take 5 minutes. Said Derek Zhu, Senior Strategy Manager of Keystone Cable.

SIMTech has developed an innovative application based on an Android smart system that uses passive RFID tags to automatically identify cable reels and determine their location. Keystone Cable starts by dividing the factory area and storage area, each area is assigned a unique identification code. By deploying and installing Xerafy Data Trak ll tags for each specific storage area, a permanent location ID is determined for each area. At the same time, Keystone Cable installed Data Trakll labels on more than 500 cable reels in the factory, and each label has a unique serial number to identify the reel. In other words, two tags are used to identify and locate a roll, so the staff don’t have to worry about the reading and writing direction of the tags when storing the roll.

Data Trak ll comes from the Xerafy Trak series and is positioned to provide cost-effective RFID solutions for logistics warehousing, IT asset management and financial services. The read and write performance of tags on metal surfaces is the key to Keystone Cable’s RFID applications, because cable reels are stored on metal shelves, and ordinary tags cannot be read and written in such an environment.

The Android-based application and web-based location database developed by the Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology can track and locate all tagged cable reels. When a staff member finds that a certain reel is moved, he only needs to use an Android smartphone with an ARETEPOP RFID read-write plug-in to scan the label located in the area, and the RFID will automatically update the location information representing the cable reel in the system , The whole process only takes a few seconds. Compared with the half-hour search time in the past, Keystone Cable’s management efficiency is greatly improved.
