Import case

The Traceability System, which was first used in pork, has begun to operate in Japan.

It is expected to establish a good relationship of trust between consumers and producers

Solution: (1) Traceability System

Products: IC label, PDA, host (PC server)

Issues and effects

1 Japan’s first attempt to put the Traceability System into practice, through IC tags, PDAs, and mainframes, to manage pigs one by one.

2 Developed an IC label device that can correspond to dynamic organisms. The label (IC label) on the ears of pigs is the result of repeated trials with Fujitsu. The completed label can correspond to the growth and movement of the body. .

3 Constructed a framework for “you can see the photos of producers” to ensure the trust relationship between producers and consumers. Take the lead in creating a public pork production information framework so that consumers’ opinions can be directly reflected.

4 To achieve an efficient process for a series of operations such as voucher processing, electronically the previous written voucher processing process, and daily updates can be uploaded from the PDA to the host in real time.

Porkland Co., Ltd. and Towada Lake Kogen Farm Co., Ltd. are group companies that operate farms adjacent to Kazuno-gun, Akita Prefecture. Since the establishment of the group in 2007, it has been committed to the production of SPF pork (2). The company has raised a total of 3,000 sows in its two farms, and it provides 75,000 pigs every year. The scale is the largest among all farms selling HI-COOP SPF pork (JA Quannong) in Japan. SPF pork is aimed at cultivating the five major diseases that are inherently free of pigs. It is very popular in supermarkets and other distribution stores. Since November 200416, the group began to apply the Traceability System to pork, setting a precedent for Japan. In this way, consumers who need to buy “safe food” and producers who pursue “food safety” can share “a high degree of peace of mind” through IT technology, thereby creating an ideal relationship of trust.

Import background

Traceability (Traceability) refers to “making information traceable management”, through the use of IT technology to establish a system of information disclosure. Take edible meat as an example. From the birth of cattle or pigs, they are individually assigned with unique identification numbers for management. All process records from breeding to processing, distribution, and sales can be made public. A new type of management structure.

Due to the continuous occurrence of mad cow disease and false origin indications, people’s concern for food safety is rapidly increasing. Therefore, the need to clearly disclose the origin, detailed records of the breeding process and distribution channels has become very obvious. In order to be able to meet such demands, Fujitsu is actively developing a traceability system using IT technology and promoting its popularization.

At present, Japan’s agriculture, forestry and fisheries administration departments have also regarded how to ensure the safety of food as the top priority at present, and promoted the popularization of the traceability system by establishing a subsidy system and other methods. In July 2004, Porkland Co., Ltd. and Towadako Kogen Farm Co., Ltd. obtained the certification of the JAS standard (3) of “Disclosure of Production Information” for the pork product category in Japan for the first time, and began to use it in November of the same year. “Traceability System”.

Import process

Create a structure that can show the “photos” of producers from farms to stores

Since its establishment, the group has continued to operate the SPF pork professional farm and has been working hard to construct an exclusive breeding system that can cultivate SPF healthy pork. The results of this effort have not only achieved environmental ISO certification enough to become a pioneer in the industry, but also achieved the goal of a clean and environmentally friendly pig raising environment through BMW technology (4). The new Traceability System (Traceability System) introduced this time is to establish a framework that can display the photos of producers “from farms to stores, etc.”.

The president of the two companies of the group, Katsuhiko Toyoshita, said: “Although we have been evaluating the feasibility of introducing traceability since the autumn of 2003, some manufacturers will also regularly review it before then. Production information. Sometimes they will bring consumers to our company to find out whether there is any discrepancy between the feed status and the record. Therefore, before the word traceability (Traceability) appeared, we had already deeply I feel the importance of disclosing production information.”

Speaking of the autumn of 2003, it is unavoidable to recall that during this period, the incident caused social commotion due to the fake beef production area. Since then, some companies have started experimenting with the production record information management system using IC chips for vegetables and other items. President Toyoshita said that when he heard the news, he intuitively thought that perhaps this could also be applied to pork.

System summary

Due to the superior performance of the IC label provided by Fujitsu, the related equipment is also very substantial, so it was decided to adopt their system

The traceability system that the group has started operating is to attach a small IC label to the ears of pigs, and write individual numbers into the label for various data management. This method itself is an experimental initiative, and all the contents of the entire system are established step by step from a groping state.

At the beginning, the solution we proposed was to use the same mini chip as the one attached to the vegetable container. However, we found that it cannot be used as soon as it encounters water, and there are also directional reading restrictions for creatures that are constantly moving. So I changed to two-dimensional bar code and other methods to test. Finally, considering that the IC label used to install pig ears not only has superior performance, but also has the support of PDA and other related equipment, it was decided to entrust Fujitsu to develop it on its behalf.
