On April 2, 2007, Rio Blanco, a Chilean company that grows avocados, began to use RFID temperature sensors to ensure that the fruits are kept at the right temperature during the 6000-mile ocean shipping from central Chile to the United States. In October 2006, after 3 weeks of testing, the RFID system enabled Rio Blanco to make timely judgments at every RFID reading point during transportation, so as to control the storage temperature of the avocados.

Rio Blanco is Chile’s fourth largest fruit exporter. The technology they use is provided by Evidencia and IMC. The RFID system uses 13.56MHz tags that comply with the ISO15693 standard. Rio Blanco and a third-party quality assurance unit use IMC handheld RFID readers to scan tags and determine whether the goods are stored at a suitable temperature. Evidencia also provides web-based software to enable Rio Blanco to monitor avocados throughout the supply chain.

The test began in October last year in Serena Valley, where the avocados are produced: 20 avocados still on the tree were wrapped with RFID tags with temperature sensors, and these avocados were picked a few hours later. Divide into several pieces and put them in different boxes, and control the temperature of the box at 39-45 degrees.

These avocados and their labels are then sorted, washed, waxed, and then packed into cardboard boxes for transportation. Each shipping pallet is affixed with a temperature sensor and marked with a number.

When the truck arrived at the Chilean port of Valparaiso, 500 miles away, quality control officials used an RFID reader to check the temperature of the cargo. Any time the temperature is too high during transportation will be reported to Rio Blanco, and they will decide whether they need to cool down the avocados before shipping.

The avocados are then loaded on a ship and shipped to Long Beach, California, where the temperature is checked with an RFID reader before being shipped to the warehouse. Check the temperature of the avocado and let the Rio Blanco management decide whether it needs to be cooled first to ensure its quality.

Evidencia technician Salomon said: They are currently providing similar systems for Del Monte Corp, Capespan, Chiquita Chile and Sunview.
