Escort Memory Systems’ RFID solution enables Seagate hard drive aseptic production line and achieves 100% reliability

Seagate Technology Corporation is the world’s largest R&D and manufacturer of hard drives, floppy disks and magnetic heads. Stratus Automation, located in California, is a company that manufactures hard disk and microelectronic processing equipment production lines. Stratus Company designs and introduces EMS Company’s RFID products into its products to improve the quality and production efficiency of users’ products.
Question: The aseptic hard disk production line must be 100% reliable:
Seagate requires every process of disk production to be controllable and every step to be recorded. Real-time tracking of each step can reduce material loss. The primary problem of WIP (Process Control) is to achieve detailed records of the production process. If the user manually enters it, mistakes will inevitably occur. Engineers have also considered the use of bar codes to solve the problem, but because the label cannot be used in the production line because the integrity of the label cannot be guaranteed during the entire production process and the non-rewritable nature of the label. It is also prone to fragmentation, and the process of recording information cannot be written in real time.
Seagate’s needs:
In the entire Seagate automated production line, composite trays transport disks to every part of the production line, including the aseptic workshop. An RFID Tag with a different identification number is installed on each tray. The automation system on the production line automatically maintains the direction of each disk, the real-time information of the operation and the next operation. The key point of this system is to read and write the RFID Tag when the pallet passes through a specific location on the production line, and then determine the correct path of the pallet based on the operation result. In the whole process, if there is any error, it may result in the loss of production steps or failure of disc production. That is to say, the recognition accuracy of the disk tray must reach 100%, and the path information of the tray through the production line must also be recorded as permanent information in the workshop automation database.
Another requirement of the new automated production line is that the system must support a high communication rate.
Escort Memory Systems Unique Solution: Solutions provided by EMS company:
By using EMS company’s HF-0405 RFID read-write controller and GWY TCP Ethernet gateway to read and write EMS company’s HMS108 Tag, Stratus Automation’s design fully meets Seagate’s requirements:
1) 100% reliability
2) Record the detailed information of material movement into the same device
3) Real-time
4) High-speed communication with the host computer
5) Read and write tag
HF 0405 read-write controller is installed in each key position of the transmission system. The reader at each point reads the HMS108 Tag on each pallet passing the point and transmits it back to the host computer. According to the returned information, the computer determines the next path of the tray at the node. If for some reason the pallet enters the wrong position, information must be written to the tag to make the pallet leave the entire production queue. This written information can be read by each HF0405, and then the entire tray will automatically enter a stop area to wait for recycling. Since all of this is processed in real time, the marked pallet can be captured by the computer before entering each station and transferred to the next station without processing. When the tray re-enters the production process, it can directly enter the correct station for correct processing, which also avoids wasting disks on the tray.
Operating condition
The report returned from Stratus currently points out that the system has run more than 15,000 read and write operations without errors.
