With the increasing popularity of NFC functions in mobile devices, workflow application provider Flowfinity Wireless began to add NFC technology to its enterprise mobile applications to help users capture and store information faster. This technology is being used in several consumer goods manufacturing companies.

Flowfinity is located in Vancouver and mainly provides companies with mobile applications for managing and customizing workflows. The company’s customers include international brands such as Kellogg, McCormick and Bacardi. These customers all use Flowfinity solutions to manage the effectiveness of on-site staff, simplify on-site sales and partner management, and reduce the cost of national retail surveys.

Dmitry Mikhailov, President and CEO of Flowfinity, said the company decided to provide NFC technology in its enterprise software to capture and store digital information more automatically. He said that iOS support for NFC technology has further promoted the matter.

Many users of the Flowfinity solution use barcodes or QR codes to read information such as asset locations or inventory, and then access and manage them at the company level. Mikhailov pointed out that it is difficult for employees to manually enter data or scan bar cards. Industrial barcode scanners are difficult to carry and handle, and manual entry is time-consuming and error-prone. Mikhailov said: “When the input process is slow, the user experience will be reduced.”

Mikhailov explained that NFC makes the process of collecting location data more automatic and flexible. He said: “We have been discussing the use of NFC technology with users this year. This technology allows users to use smartphones instead of scanners, and tag reading will be faster and easier than most barcode scanning.” In addition, customers asked Flowfinity said that NFC technology not only makes it easier for them to capture data, but also helps them better manage data.

With the help of NFC technology, managers can distribute an NFC ID badge to each employee to collect information about the personnel’s presence time, work record, and experience level. If there is no authorized person on site, the system will issue a warning.

For consumer goods companies, field employees can use the system to identify inventory levels. Employees can read the NFC tags on the display stand to confirm their location and replenish goods when needed.

NFC can also be used in oil and gas or construction sites. The inspector can read the NFC tag by using a mobile device to confirm that the device is in the correct position. This can not only help employers confirm that employees are on-site, but also provide required records with insurance companies or regulatory agencies.

On the production line, assemblers can scan the NFC tag and use the Flowfinity enterprise application to confirm that all parts are online, thereby preventing fools. In addition, users can use NFC technology to create a mini database for each item. Users can run the Flowfinity application to query the target to view item information.

By providing NFC functionality, the company intends to provide more flexible products for companies that are less interested in the technology itself. Mikhailov said: “Usually there is no company that specializes in looking for NFC technology or barcode technology. On the contrary, they usually find that NFC technology is a suitable solution when they are looking for solutions to specific problems. Flowfinity can recommend suitable NFC tags for users. For example, in some application scenarios, labels need to be used in harsh conditions or on specific shapes.”

Currently, several companies are testing NFC tags. Mikhailov said: “Now, we are continuously collecting user feedback. From the effect point of view, NFC technology provides greater flexibility.”
