question

In the past, the basic cost of garbage removal and transportation in the community was determined by the size of the garbage can. An elderly couple and a family with many children will pay the same removal cost for using the same size bin. Otto’s mission is to find a better way to remove waste and educate citizens to achieve their waste reduction goals.

solution

Otto Lift-System GmbH has introduced a “garbage removal and metering system” in several communities in Germany, and plans to expand this system throughout Germany and even other European countries.

This system provides two different ways for the community to use, one is to calculate the weight separately and record the amount of waste (identification and weighing) for each user’s waste. Another way is that when the user’s garbage is full, it is placed in a designated place for clearing (identification), and the clearing truck will collect it from the user once a week. This system uses the unique number paid by the radio transceiver (Transponder) developed by TIRIS as the identification basis to measure each trash can separately, and each number corresponds to a single customer in the main database. The radio transceiver is installed on the front of the bin.

When the bin is placed on the lift arm, the radio transceiver automatically interprets the ID code via the antenna mounted on the lift arm and stores it in the code reader. At the same time, the total weight of the bin will be recorded once. When the garbage is poured out, the weight of the empty box is recorded again, and the weight of the second time is subtracted, which is the weight of the garbage and recorded. All data will be logged in the computer installed in the cab, and a back-up report will be printed out every time it is cleared to maintain the safety of the data. When the garbage truck completes the cleaning process for a day, it will drive back to the management center. At this time, the driver will remove the memory card of the computer on the vehicle and store the data in the central computer of the management center. This method of transferring on-board data to the master database ensures that every data entry is securely recorded. The central computer then calculates the removal and transportation costs individually according to the amount of garbage generated by each household. And the central computer is also connected to the computer of the municipal center, so that the community manager can supervise the operation of the whole system.

benefit

This system achieves the purpose of encouraging citizens to reduce waste and replace waste production with waste utilization. It promotes the positive benefits of garbage sorting and recycling to the public. In addition, it enables users to understand that waste reduction can save transportation costs.

This case is an example of the use of TIRIS radio equipment in a difficult environment: marking and reading equipment can be reliably read in long-term exposure to high temperature, humidity and dirty environments. And other automatic identification systems such as barcodes, etc., still need a long time to achieve the same requirements.
