A supermarket in Sao Paulo, Brazil is equipped with a batch of smart shopping carts equipped with UHF RFID tags. Customers can get recipes, diet and health information from the electronic display of the shopping cart.

The Hellmanns mayonnaise management department under Unilever in Brazil uses RFID technology to increase the visibility of its products. A small display screen and passive UHF EPC Gen 2 RFID tags are installed on the shopping cart, and RFID readers and antennas are installed on the corridor shelves. When shoppers pass the salad zone, the video information of the related products will be displayed on the shopping cart display. If customers are interested in the product, they can click on the touch screen to continue to produce detailed information about the product, such as ingredients, expiration date, etc., and share it with friends on social networks.

According to the marketing and advertising department, the publicity program was a success. In the first few months, 45,000 customers experienced the shopping cart, and sales increased by 68%, which expanded the brand awareness of the product; for customers, it provided shoppers with a new type of shopping experience.

The RFID solution is developed and designed by Cubocc, including Smartrac UHF passive RFID tags, Samsung Tab 2 7-inch display, and Impinj Speedway Revolution fixed reader and reader antenna. Iceland 2nd Nation is responsible for providing server data software, which stores the tag code of each shopping cart. When the shopping cart enters the reading range of the RFID reader (usually 2 meters), the tag information attached to the shopping cart is read. When the customer puts the salad dressing in the shopping cart, the display screen will display the discount information of the combined product or the product promotion video. Customers can also send recipes and other information to their mailboxes through the touch screen.

The consumer has emailed a selection of recipes. When prompted like this, the software stores the required recipe. Every 10 minutes, Vicente said, all queued emails are then transmitted over the 3G connection.
