European door design company Vicaima uses radio frequency identification technology to improve production efficiency

challenge
Vicaima regards the door as a work of art, bringing harmony and privacy into people’s lives. The focus behind this philosophy is continuous improvement. In order to reduce manpower time and improve the efficiency of its manufacturing process, Vicaima is the first to launch the RFID installation door and window production industry that meets EPC standards.
“We are constantly seeking technology to help maximize the quality of our products.” said Filipe Maia Ferreira, general manager of Vicaima. The amount of human intervention has almost eliminated tracking errors, thereby increasing flexibility and efficiency at the level of production control.”
solution
Vicaima has already produced RFID applications in two factories, one of which specializes in the production of wooden doors, the other specializes in the production of special order doors, the deployment will contain millions of tags.
The label is coded, printed and attached to the production line. Products can be positioned quickly and accurately, which is convenient for movement, warehouses and trucks throughout the production process. Labels play an important role in the inventory process, so Vicaima always has accurate inventory. The RFID application is integrated with Vicaima’s ERP system to achieve maximum flexibility and efficiency in terms of production and inventory control levels.
Once the tag is attached to the door, the door is tracked throughout the production process. The system is fully automated, so the machine can read which door arrives and know what process should happen. The door also needs the next step, whether on the production line or at another site in the warehouse. Workers save time because they do not have to register doors in the ERP system because the products are automatically verified.
Vicaima cooperated with CREATIVESYSTEMS, an RFID consulting company based in Portugal, to jointly design and deploy RFID applications. Jo?o Vila?a, general manager of CREATIVESYSTEMS, said: “Embedding tags in doors is a major challenge.” In all cases, it spends a lot of technology and RF frequency knowledge to make it work. We have done a lot of verification and testing. “
result
The productivity of this solution has continued to increase, and potential errors have been eliminated. The managers of Vicaima gained more understanding during the production process: they can easily see the time it takes for each door to pass through each stage of the production process.
CREATIVESYSTEMS adjusts the label and card reader to the unique conditions on the production line, achieving 99% reading accuracy. “The readability of the label in any situation is also a challenge because of the variety of doors.” Vila?a said that even if the door contains metal, such as fire doors, labels can be used. He called Alien’s tool “great”, noting that the toolkit provided him with the information he needed to adjust and test readers.
The RFID system is fully integrated into Vicaima’s ERP system, so Vicaima managers can access the data for reports and queries. “Data management is a challenge because we must ensure that we do not lose any information between the RFID system and the ERP system,” Vila?a said. “We can accurately track what happens on the shift from 2 to 8 o’clock.”
