Yesterday, IBM and Container Centralen announced that until February 1, 2010, Container Centralen, the largest provider of reusable transportation equipment and services in Europe, will use IBM sensor technology to participate in tracking the process of products in the horticultural supply chain-from the breeder to the Wholesalers and retailers in more than 40 countries in Europe. This project is currently the largest RFID tracking application in the horticulture industry.

Approximately 80,000 growers, wholesalers and retailers use Container Centralen flower and potted plant carts to transport flowers and plants, keeping them in their best condition as quickly and as possible. The company’s flower and potted plant carts-called “CC Containers”-are designed to meet the special needs of the horticulture industry. The container is suitable for mechanical processing, and because flowers and plants are often sold in retail, they can be shipped directly from the grower to the end customer without changing hands in the middle, which means that the product suffers less damage and reduces the overall wholesale cost.

In order to meet the needs of customers, Container Centralen needs to allow customers in need to obtain trailers as soon as possible. A total of 3.5 million flower and potted plant carts are recycled in the CC Pool System” international network, so trailer tracking is very necessary.

In cooperation with IBM, Container Centralen installed a smart RFID tag on each trailer, providing unprecedented transparency and security for all parties in the horticulture supply chain. Thanks to improved order management, all parties in the supply chain-from incubators to wholesalers and retailers-have saved huge costs.

“After extensive research on RFID technology in the past few years, we are convinced that RFID applications are of great significance to us and our customers. We are very pleased to find that our project partners have the same views on the project prospects and RFID. Our overall goal is to improve efficiency. And to reduce operating costs and improve the circulation control of CC containers in the CC Pool System are in line with the future needs of our retailers,” Container Centralen CEO Tonny Vangsgaard Gravesen said.

In addition to accelerating supply chain operations, Container Centralen’s RFID project will prevent counterfeit trailers and ensure higher service quality throughout the supply chain.

After successful testing, Container Centralen decided to formally adopt RFID technology in its operations. The company plans to complete the labeling of all trailers by 2010.

All RFID tag data will be stored in IBM WebSphere Sensor Events software.
