1. Industry background and application requirements

Book management is an important aspect of the application of RFID technology, and the library is the application place with the most concentrated demand for book management. According to research and analysis, there are currently more than 10,000 libraries nationwide, and most libraries have transitioned from a purely manual management mode to a digital management mode that uses bar code recognition, computer networks, and computer software technologies. Although many modern technologies have been adopted, there are still many problems that plague the management and staff of the library. For example, problems such as self-service borrowing and returning of books, quick inventory of books, searching, and sorting out of chaotic books have not been solved well, which hinders the library from further improving the management and service level. The library industry is also constantly striving to find a more advanced technology to realize their urgent desires.

Based on the above-mentioned industry background and needs, we conduct in-depth research and analysis, and rely on Yuanwanggu’s strong RFID technology research and development capabilities to apply RFID technology to library management to solve the above-mentioned problems that plague library book management. After years of research and development efforts, a series of library supporting equipment has been formed, which provides a complete solution for the library application field. In November 2006, Yuanwanggu Company cooperated with Shantou University Library to implement the RFID book management system.

Different from the current RFID technology used in libraries in the world, the application of RFID technology in libraries today is mainly focused on HF band RFID technology, while the book management RFID technology developed by Yuanwanggu Company is based on RFID technology in UHF frequency band. From the perspective of technical analysis, in the application of book management, UHF band RFID technology has more advantages than HF band RFID technology, and it is also a direction for the development of library book RFID technology management in the future.

2. System implementation goals

Through systematic demand research, the main problems that need to be solved in the process of applying RFID technology to library book management include the following aspects:

1. Realize electronic label conversion

2. Realize the self-service borrowing and returning of books

3. Achieve quick inventory of books

4. Realize fast search of books
5. Achieve quick sorting of books on the wrong shelf
6. Realize RFID security access control
7. Achieve seamless link with existing systems

The library book management solution based on UHF frequency band RFID technology and related RFID equipment developed by Yuanwanggu Company solved the above 7 problems based on application requirements, and achieved good results in preliminary applications. The subsequent promotion and application laid a solid foundation.

Three, system composition

The RFID book management system includes: label conversion system, self-service book borrowing system, self-service book return system, intelligent search system, cart-type inventory system, and security door detection system. As shown in Figure 1.

1. Label conversion system

The tag conversion system is a bridge between the radio frequency identification technology (RFID) and the existing library management system. Through the tag conversion system, the RFID unique identification number is bound to the unique book code, and the RFID technology is managed with the existing library. The system is connected to realize the access to the detailed information of books and readers, so as to integrate RFID technology into the existing library system.
The label conversion system completes the conversion of book electronic labels, shelf labels and library card electronic labels. The label conversion system consists of two parts: hardware and software systems.

(1) Hardware composition

The label conversion system hardware includes: a control host and a label conversion device. The control host is used to install the label conversion software system to control the data conversion of the book label and the library card label, and realize the binding of label information and other information such as bar codes. Access to detailed information of books and readers can be achieved through binding.

(2) Label conversion software system

The label conversion software system adopts the B/S structure to realize the label conversion. The purpose of adopting the B/S structure is to minimize the post-maintenance work of library managers. Any computer connected to the label conversion device can realize the label conversion work through the IE browser. The main interface of the label conversion system is shown in Figure 2.

2. Self-service loan and return system

Before RFID technology was adopted, some libraries used barcode and magnetic stripe technology to realize self-service borrowing and returning of books. However, due to the limitation of barcode and magnetic stripe technology, not only could only borrow and return one book at a time, but there were also certain The loopholes (not detailed here) have greatly reduced the efficiency of self-service borrowing and returning books, and have not brought substantial improvements to the work of the library. The emergence of radio frequency identification technology has satisfactorily solved the above-mentioned problems. The RFID self-service borrowing and returning system can realize the self-service borrowing and returning of multiple books at one time, and there will be no loopholes based on barcode and magnetic stripe technology, which greatly improves the library’s humanized service level and work efficiency.

The self-service borrowing and returning system (as shown in Figure 3) combines radio frequency identification, computer, network, software and touch screen control operation technology to realize the self-service borrowing and returning function of books with electronic tags. The system consists of: control host, LCD touch display, RFID radio frequency module, embedded printer, multimedia voice system, through the self-service lending and returning software installed on the control computer to realize the self-service lending and returning of books (Figure 3). The self-service book borrowing and returning machine has the characteristics of beautiful appearance, simple system operation, integrated book borrowing and returning (multiple books can be borrowed and returned at the same time), fast recognition speed, high borrowing and returning efficiency, and convenient equipment installation and maintenance (Figure 4).

Figure 3 Main interface of the self-service loan and return system

Figure 4 Self-service Book Borrowing and Returning Machine

The self-service borrowing and returning system completes the self-service borrowing and returning of books. The system has a friendly interface and easy operation. Integrate book borrowing and book return operations into one, realize multiple functions in one machine, and reduce user input costs. Quickly borrow and return, you can borrow or return multiple books at the same time. The system configuration is flexible, and the borrowing and returning function can be simplified according to user needs, that is, it can be transformed into a self-service book borrowing machine or a book returning machine. Use LCD touch display to simplify borrowing and returning operations. The picture above shows the main interface of the self-service lending and returning system and the self-service lending and returning machine.

During the implementation of Shantou University Library, as many readers used bar code library cards, according to this demand, the self-service loan system was modified and bar code scanners were installed to realize the compatible reading of RFID and bar code library cards. , So that all readers can use the self-service book borrowing and returning system for self-service book borrowing and returning.

3. Safety inspection system

The security detection system is a system for detecting books with electronic tags. The hardware composition of the safety detection system includes: RFID radio frequency module, sound and light alarm module, and safety door shell. The book detection and anti-theft is realized through the automatic detection software installed on the control computer (Figure 5). The safety detection system has the characteristics of long recognition distance, fast recognition speed, sound and light alarm, and zero false alarms. At present, the recognition distance of the safety door can reach 2.5 meters (Figure 6).

4. Automatic inventory system

At present, the library mainly uses barcode technology to count books. When taking inventory, each book must be removed from the shelf and then scanned with a barcode scanner. In this way, the efficiency of inventory is very low, and it can be realized for a small number of books. It can handle it, but it’s hard to count a large number of books. Due to the low inventory efficiency and the need to close the library during inventory, it is almost impossible for most libraries to achieve a comprehensive inventory of books. With RFID technology, the inventory problem can be easily solved. In the inventory link, the powerful advantages of RFID technology are fully demonstrated: non-contact, fast, and simultaneous reading of multiple books and information books.

The automatic inventory system provides users with two solutions, a cart-type mobile inventory platform and a portable inventory platform.

The cart-type inventory platform has the characteristics of long continuous working time, friendly operation interface, and strong data processing ability. The cart mobile inventory platform supports Chinese Windows XP operating system.

The portable inventory platform is light in weight and easy to carry. The portable reader adopts ergonomic design, has a good hand feeling and is light in weight. Using the Chinese Windows Mobile operating system, not only can search for books, but also can realize the management function of the graphical user interface. The portable reader has a large memory capacity, can save the information read on the spot, and provide data download function to facilitate data exchange. The portable reader can be preset to search for book information, and when new information is read, it will automatically compare with the preset book information, and can give an alarm.

The inventory system can not only realize the rapid inventory of books, but also realize the sorting of books on the wrong shelves, so that the inventory and sorting of books on the wrong shelves can be handled satisfactorily in one link.

5. Smart Search System

At present, many books and materials in the library are reflected in the books. Readers find the book information through the retrieval system, and when they pick up the book from the shelf according to the category of the book, they often cannot find the book. This happens This is caused by the fact that the books are not placed in categories. After using RFID technology to manage books, the above-mentioned problems can be solved well. Use the portable search terminal to search for this part of the books, and solve the above problems well.

The intelligent search system completes the quick search of books. There are two ways to find book information and input: manual way and data download way.

Manual entry refers to directly entering the book information that needs to be searched on the portable search terminal, and multiple book information can be entered at one time.

The data download method is to connect to the business system through a wireless local area network (802.11b/g), download the book information that the administrator enters in advance to be searched to the handheld terminal, and search for the book.

Fourth, the system application effect

The RFID book management system did not make any changes to the original book management system, and successfully docked with the original system to realize data sharing. The implementation of the self-service borrowing and returning system simplifies the procedures for readers to borrow and return books, shortens the book circulation cycle, increases the book borrowing rate, improves the library’s humanized service level, and gives full play to the library’s public service functions, which has been welcomed by readers . The implementation of the cart-type and portable inventory system provides a new inventory model for the library, reduces the labor intensity of management staff, and greatly improves the efficiency of book inventory and sorting books on the wrong shelf. The intelligent search system makes the search of books on the wrong shelf faster and more convenient, further digs out potential book resources, and improves the utilization rate of book materials. The long-distance RFID security door is put into use, the security door is placed more widely, and readers can enter and exit more freely. Because the RFID security door will not produce false alarms, it avoids unnecessary disputes between readers and managers, and harmonizes readers and managers. Relationship.
