Euro Pool Systems’ “Future Deposit” uses RFID to improve efficiency and accuracy

As more than 2 million returnable transport items (RTI) flow through its new warehouse, Euro Pool Systems (EPS) has automatically tracked them. The facility was built to serve the Belgian supermarket chain Ahold Delhaize.
With Aucxis’ RFID solution, RTIs (each with an RFID tag) can be tracked through the company’s receiving, counting, handling, and leaving process, and then sent to Ahold Delhaize’s reusable store. The company reports that the result of this is to improve the efficiency and productivity of the entire deposition process, and result in a 30% reduction in processing costs.
EPS provides reusable packaging for the European cold supply chain market. Their pallets and folding boxes are used for fresh food and packaged food delivered to 30 countries; the company reports that in fact, there are 1 billion EPS boxes in circulation every year. The retailer pays the rental fee for the use of these containers and is responsible for transporting these boxes to their own sites.
With the new RFID-based solution, the company can track and manage the movement of those boxes through the new returnable logistics distribution center (RLDC) in Zellik, Belgium. EPS established the factory in cooperation with Ahold Delhaize, which has been cooperating with Euro Pool Systems since 2004. Retailers use EPS and their own plastic boxes to package all fresh products.
In order to track and track the location of its RTI, EPS has used RFID technology for more than ten years. The company began applying UHF EPC tags to many of its pallets and boxes in 2008. Over time, more types of assets have been added to this set of equipment. Currently, the company offers about 10 different types of containers, including fish boxes, plastic pallets and rolling platforms. Not all RTIs are marked.
