Patrizia Pepe is a fashion brand of Tessilform Spa. It was born in 1998 and has a footprint in Europe, the Middle East and Asia. Patrizia Pepe’s products include women’s, men’s and ladies’ series, which can provide a complete set of fashions, including a series of accessories, from shoes and bags to jewelry. The company sells its apparel products through a network of retailers and its own stores.

Tessilform’s philosophy of operating Patrizia Pepe is that in addition to providing regular series, it also provides some small products every week, so that the retailer’s shelves are always new. They realize this idea through a flexible design, production and sales system managed by their Florence headquarters.

Patrizia Pepe hopes to improve the logistics level of its warehouse: purchase goods from its production base, relocate the goods throughout the warehouse, and pack the goods before distribution to retail outlets. They initially tried to use barcodes to achieve this functionality. Since the barcode must be scanned line by line, it takes a long time for the goods to be checked and accepted.

Patrizia Pepe cooperated with the University of Florence to implement a five-month pilot project, starting in August 2009, to test the effectiveness of RFID solutions. The pilot put labels on approximately 60,000 items in the second season series and made the company finally decide to go one step further and label all products.

Patrizia Pepe chose Solo Identificazione e Protezione as the system integrator for the production project. Since Solo mainly focuses on product identification and labeling, rather than hardware, it subcontracted the RFID hardware project to IDNOVA. IDNOVA chose the Impinj Speedway Revolution reader, mainly because of its consistent high-quality and high-performance performance.

The preliminary work in the pilot phase includes choosing where to place RFID tags and what information to write on them. In the case of Patrizia Pepe, they decided to include EAN 13 (a bar code standard that originated in Europe, but was defined as an extension of the American universal product code by the GS1 standards organization), production country information, and production sequence.

They put the RFID tag behind the barcode on their brand label so that they can encode the RFID tag information while printing the barcode. Currently, they use two types of labels, one is 64 × 34 cm, and the other is 37 × 14 cm. Both labels use Impinj Monza label chips.

The pre-encoded and printed labels will be sent to Patrizia Pepe’s product manufacturer for the label to be added to the finished product. The next question is to ensure that all these tags can be effectively read in the warehouse.

  IDNOVA custom antenna channels using Impinj Speedway Revolution readers can speed up the acceptance and delivery of goods.

  A custom portal with antenna, Speedway reader and controller hidden in the pillar helps Patrizia Pepe monitor the clothing on its hanger conveyor.

  

IDNOVA has designed a customized channel for the boxed goods entering and leaving the warehouse to meet the size requirements of different boxes. Each custom channel includes four antennas designed by IDNOVA, connected to an Impinj Speedway Revolution reader. Patrizia Pepe uses seven such aisles, which also includes a weighing system to check the weight of each container passing through the aisle.

IDNOVA designed a custom entrance for clothes that move in the warehouse via hangers (also based on the Impinj Speedway Revolution reader) with four antennas, two near-field antennas and two far-field antennas. With four such entrances distributed in the warehouse, Patrizia Pepe can use them to more easily determine the location of goods in transit.

The main benefit that Patrizia Pepe currently obtains is to improve the efficiency of the logistics process. Taking goods in storage as an example, operators used bar code readers to process only 180-200 pieces of goods per hour. After using the new RFID system, they increased their operational efficiency to 380-400 pieces of goods per hour. For the distribution of goods to retail locations (outbound), previously each operator could only handle 140 pieces of goods per hour. Now, by using the RFID system, it has increased to 330 items per hour.

In addition to improving efficiency, RFID has also increased the accuracy of logistics. For example, last season, Patrizia Pepe did not receive any error complaints from its customers. The entire warehouse is completely dependent on RFID.

Now, all of their products (approximately 2.2 million products) have RFID tags, and Patrizia Pepe is studying how to further utilize this technology.

 When a customer is holding a piece of clothing close to a display area with RFID function, the display will provide more detailed information.

The first project is to install product information “totem” areas in retail outlets in Florence and Rome. When the customer walks over, the totem will provide information about the clothing they are holding. The large display connected to the company’s website displays the tailoring details of the clothing, the video of the model wearing the clothing, and gives some suggestions for matching products or accessories. All of this enhances the customer experience and brings other potential sales opportunities at the same time.

Patrizia Pepe plans to use RFID tags and the information they contain to monitor the flow of goods in all retail outlets in the future.
